Very nice! How did you get the sky colors to blend so smoothly? It looks air-brushed.

Thank you! The sky took a few layers to get right. It took a lot of very fast blending with a big 3" brush.

You've made my week!!! Thank you so much for the great comment! Actually, the sky took about 7 layers to finally get right. The rest painted fairly fast. If memory serves, the painting took about 48 hours.

All the best,

David

Hi David,

It's a funny story actually on how I came about looking at your painting

I live in a place called Como, in Sydney, Australia ( google map it if you like :-) )

After seeing the movie called Tremors starring Kevin Bacon, I loved the landscapes around the Inyo county are and the Seqouia parks...and then I saw your painting!! It was funny, a couple of buddies at work saw the picture too and they were like a human painted that ??? Looks to good to be real!!!

48 Hours is a long time, but look at the result, it's beautiful!

Cheers mate!

Heath

Thank you. By the way is this painting based on the general sherman in sequoia?

Perhaps more of an impression of these great giants than of a single individual, then again, the General Sherman is magnificent!

Took me a good 2 or so minuits to walk around it and even if the parimeter fence wasnt there it would still take a good min or so! These trees are amazing. I would love to go again one day.

So clean!

Have you written any articles on color theory? If not, you should! You choose amazing schemes. I'm very curious as to how you mixed your colors? How thick is the paint? Do you keep the painting a pretty uniformed surface or do you retain the brushstrokes?

Hi Dragonflower,

Thank you so much for your kind comments on my work. I do teach a class on color that includes most of the workable color theories. I mix all my color from a very limited palette, white, Windsor Yellow, Cadmium Red, Ultramarine Blue, Thalo blue, Permanent Rose and ivory black. The Thalo Blue and Permanent Rose allow me to include magenta and cyan in my mixes.

The paint film is fairly thin accept in the lighter passages where I use more impasto or textural brushwork.

Best, David

Having just re-read Lord of the Rings, this very much makes me think of the entrance to Lothlorien.

Again, beautiful, beautiful work - the colours, the light/shadow, the textures. And again, although I take it this piece is based on reality, it could just as easily be a fantastical piece - from a quick glimpse of your gallery, I get the feel that a lot of your landscapes have a very blurry line between reality and fantasy; as if it's up to the viewer to decide.

Lovely :)
